Upcycling with Whitney

Planet Earth needs our help! We produce too much trash and recycling just isn’t enough! Luckily, there’s something more we can do - upcycling! In this stellar workshop, our very own Whitney will show girls how to make useful artistic items out of regular stuff that’s just lying all around the house e.g. buttons out of bottle caps and thread out of plastic bags. It’s stylish and ecofriendly! Thanks Whit!

Mentorship Program

Mary Wright Edelman said, “You cannot be what you cannot see.” Girls must be surrounded by strong women in order to aspire to become strong women.

Every girl in Perfect Ten is offered the opportunity to have a mentor, an adult woman in the Hudson community. Mentors offer their wisdom, experience, and friendship. Once a month, the girls and their mentors explore the historic, artistic, cultural, and recreational wealth of our area. Everyone has fun and relationships develop and mature. We believe that every girl should have a woman in their life, outside of their family, to look up to, to learn and seek advice from, and to spend quality time with. The generosity and support of the women who are involved with Perfect Ten is monumental and far-reaching.

Please contact Tina at tina@perfecttenafterschool.org if you are interested in becoming a mentor.

HOMEWORK/TUTORING

We believe that education is the gateway to independence. Girls have the opportunity to work with experienced for extra school support. We check Student Portals for assignments, and we monitor each girl's grades to help them stay on top of rigorous coursework. Girls have access to computers, books, and the library downstairs in order to get their homework done thoroughly and timely. We meet with teachers and guidance counselors monthly to ensure that each individual girl is getting the attention and academic help they need during the after school time.

TRIPS/SCHOOL BREAKS

We like to get out and about, visiting different cultural and historic sites. Perfect Ten also travels down to New York City a few times a year, as well as to Washington, D.C. Girls go to see movies in theaters, to museums to view new and exciting exhibits, to watch live dance and musical performances at various venues, to hike and camp around the beautiful Catskills region, to participate in rallies and marches locally to speak out for social justice, and more. The world is our classroom, and we take exploration seriously!

Ready, Set, Go:

Our comprehensive job training program that seeks to get our Blooms up and ready for the workforce so that they can become strong independent and financially secure women.

Job Training

This is an 8-week course that covers the essentials of finding a job, landing the job, and keeping it. We begin with the art of filling out paperwork, creating resumes and cover letters, prepping for job interviews, and understanding job expectations. Additionally, we dive into the ins and outs of customer service, including communication skills, attitude, working as part of a team, and acting professionally.  We teach girls about the varying roles and organizational structures that exist within different industries. We aim to instill a sense of confidence and preparedness so that anxiety does not inhibit their performance. This course is a pre-requisite for apprenticeship placement.

Money Management

This workshop is a way to help girls understand the basics of personal finances and the vocabulary for understanding the finances of the industry they are about to tap into. They will develop the “how to” skills of building a credit rating, dealing with financial service providers, and assessing their own purchasing power. The goal is that, in conjunction with job readiness, they will also establish basic money management skills needed to build healthy financial habits and an independent future.
